A friend sent me the following excerpt from the book Zaviya by famous writer and philosopher Ashfaque Ahmed and I thought I must share it with my viewers for it contains something that only few can understand.
Asfaque Ahmed and his book 'Zaviya' |
For those who cannot understand Urdu, a translation is given after the Urdu text.

English Translation:
Before I give the translation, let me say a few words about the writer. Ashfaque Ahmed is a famous Urdu language writer, thinker and philosophizer. While he mainly concentrated on the issue related to the wrongdoings by the rich and famous and those in power, in the later stage of life, he started to write something for improvement of the morality of the people who read him by narrating small incidents from our life, which we otherwise ignore to be non issues or meaningless.
Now coming to the excerpt above. AS narrated by Ashfaque Ahmed, one day he was going with one of his elders and mentor, whom he often referred to as 'Baba Jee" - an honourable address to an old and learned. They came across a beggar who asked them for the alms. The Baba Jee gave him One Rupee (in those days which are quoted in the excerpt, one rupee was a lot of money). Quite naturally the beggar was flabergasted and was overjoyed and prayed for the Baba Jee.
The Baba Jee asked the begger as to how much he had earned that day, to which the beggar replied ten rupees. Baba Jee asked him that since he had made lot of money, why did not he also 'give' form what he had 'earned' to someone else who was more needy. The beggar was surprised to listen to this and remarked that he himself was a beggar, so could he give something to someone else. Baba Jee replied, "It is not the question of being a beggar - anyone who as something, must give out a part to someone else."
The beggar thought for a while, then went to a nearby vendor who making some hot snacks for the poor and the passer byes. The beggar bough some for a few rupees for his day's earning and then gave these to a few poor labourers walking by. Quite naturally the labourers were overjoyed of this unexpected 'treat' and thanked the 'beggar turned giver'.
Baba Jee then told the beggar that that day he had made him, the beggar, a giver from a simple beggar. And that when one gives, his status is automatically elevated to that of a giver from just being an ordinary.
I leave the rest for the readers to conclude and draw inferences from this simple narration of a small incidence which can turn our lives to an extent that we can not even imagine. And if we give from what we have to those who are less fortunate than us, no matter how poor we ourselves may be, the joy of giving would refresh our souls and makes us inner self dance with joy, happiness and achievement.
Do give someone next time you come across who needs more what is in your wallet - it will change your life forever.

PS: A similar anecdote can be read in the post on Ashfaque Ahmed, for which the link is given above. I would write the translation of that excerpt some other day.
