8th March - International Women’s Day

8th of March is a special day dedicated to the women of the world. The theme selected for this day is Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women.

The theme of 2011 emphasizes on providing equal opportunities to the women, as unless women are not in step with the modern technology and advancement taking in every field of education, technology, business and mother care, the future generations would not be able to keep pace with the progress that the people of developed countries have attained. There is a need more than ever before for the active participation, equality and development of women to secure peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedom.

And at the same time we must acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security. For the women of the world, the Day's symbolism has a wider meaning: It is an occasion to review how far they have come in their struggle for equality, peace and development. It is also an opportunity to unite, network and mobilize for meaningful change.
Like many developing countries of the world, Pakistan has made a lot of progress in the empowerment of the women. Today more and more women are getting higher school and university level education. Even in remote rural areas, the trend of sending girls to schools is on the increase. Women in Pakistan, besides heading many organizations, besides joining the armed forces of Pakistan as fighter pilots and engineers.

Having said that, a majority of women is still target of discriminatory laws and family traditions. The draconian punishments of karo kari and vini plague the life of rural women. The domestic violence on women though has seen a lowering trend, but still a large number of women are subjected to domestic violence and harassment. There have been organizations that are working for the betterment of women life and have had made significant success. A lot more needs to be done, though.

Let me add here for information of my viewers that the first International Women’s Day occurred on March 19 in 1911 and organized meetings, was a big success in countries such as Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Thus this year, the women and the world also celebrates its centenary as well.

A great post. I agree with you, but in Pakistan despite all the good and positive change for women welfare, there is a long way to go. In fact, we have to do a lot to provide our women with basic human rights like health, education, equal opportunities, respect, security and empowerment.
